Remember hearing how technology was going to usher in the age of total leisure? The reality is many of us are putting in longer workweeks, and the workplace is more demanding on our lives than ever. In this difficult environment, how can we strive to maintain balance between work and life?

The truth is that work/life balance really comes down to two things:

  1. Knowing your priorities, and
  2. Making tough choices.

However, most people we work with have lives that are spinning too fast to take a step back, assess priorities, and truly put frameworks in place to help make those difficult choices.

So, how do we start?  We have found that it helps to get a good perspective on what we're striving for in the first place.  Is it really balance?  Life can't simply boil down to a work bucket and a life bucket.  Balance implies perfect leveling of the variables in our life and the real world just doesn't afford such luxury.  There are times when issues from home must be dealt with during the day while we are at work.  There are urgent work issues that must be done over a weekend or in an evening while at home.  If we wait until everything is seemingly in balance, we will be waiting a long time!
"Balance implies perfect leveling of the variables in our life and the real world just doesn't afford such luxury."

This presentation suggests a metaphor of navigation instead of balance.  By better understanding some basic principles involved with navigating a sailboat, we learn some important insights into how we can more effectively navigate through our lives.  In addition, the presentation provides an overview of an extremely effective process for better juggling all the activities and priorities that fly our way each day to better help us avoid dropping the proverbial ball.  Our experience has found that as people improve their ability to juggle today's workload, they are better enabled to start taking on the responsibility of navigating their lives.

This very practical and highly interactive session focuses on how you can more successfully strive for work/life balance, as well as more productively help those on your teams. The session is available in a 45-60 minute keynote format, a 90-120 minute classroom session, or a half-day tutorial session.
